Viewing and Exploring Costs

Troposphere gives you two complementary pages for working with cost data: a high-level Overview for understanding the state of spend at a glance, and a deeper Explorer for slicing costs along any dimension.

Costs Overview#

Navigate to Costs > Overview in the sidebar. The page is built for quick situational awareness.

Summary cards#

Four cards at the top summarise the current state of spend:

• Estimated Costs – running total for the current month, with a percentage change indicator relative to the previous month.
• Previous Month – the actual total from last month, for comparison.
• Connections – number of active connections contributing to the figures.
• Cost Buckets – number of cost buckets configured in the organisation.

Cost Trend chart#

A single line chart shows monthly costs over the last six months, giving you an at-a-glance sense of trajectory.

Breakdowns#

Two side-by-side panels break down the current month’s spend:

• Cost by Connection – how much each connected subscription or account contributed.
• Cost by Category – how spend maps to resource categories (Compute, Storage, Networking, Database, and so on).

Each row shows the absolute cost and a bar indicating its proportion of the total.

Cost Explorer#

For deeper analysis, navigate to Costs > Explore. The Explorer lets you slice spend along any dimension and drill from a group down to the individual resources that make up its cost.

Group by#

Above the results, use the Group By pills to choose the dimension to break costs down by:

• Connection – per subscription/account.
• Cost Bucket – per cost bucket in your hierarchy.
• Category – per resource category.
• Region – per geographic region.

The page re-renders as soon as you pick a new dimension, so experimenting is cheap.

Date range#

Use the date range selector to restrict the query to a specific period. Presets cover common windows (Yesterday, Last 7 Days, and so on); pick a custom range for anything else.

Drilling down#

Each group row can be expanded to reveal the resources that make up that group’s cost. This is the fastest way to answer questions like “Why did the Networking category spike this week?” – open the group, see the top contributing resources, and click through to any resource you want to investigate further.

Which page when?#

• Use Overview for status checks, spotting month-over-month changes, and opening a conversation about spend.
• Use Explorer when you have a specific question that needs a specific cut – by region, by bucket, by time window, or drilled all the way down to individual resources.
• Use Forecasts to project forward instead of looking back.
