Setting Budgets
Budgets let you define monthly spending limits on any cost bucket. Once a budget is set, Troposphere tracks actual spend against it on every sync and surfaces the remaining headroom on the bucket’s overview.
Setting a budget on a new bucket
Budget settings are part of the standard Cost Bucket form, so you can configure them during creation:
- Navigate to Costs > Cost Buckets and click New.
- Fill in the bucket name, parent, and label as described in Working with Cost Buckets.
- Toggle Budget Tracking on.
- Choose a Budget Mode:
- Own Budget – the bucket has its own fixed monthly budget. Enter the amount in the Budget field that appears.
- Rollup from Children – the effective budget is calculated as the sum of the budgets on the bucket’s immediate children.
- Click Add Cost Bucket.
Setting a budget on an existing bucket
- On the Cost Buckets page, open the three-dot action menu for the row you want to update and click Edit.
- In the Update Cost Bucket dialog, toggle Budget Tracking on (or adjust the mode/amount if it is already on).
- Click Update Cost Bucket.
Budget mode guidance
- Use Own Budget for buckets that represent an actual spending envelope – a team’s monthly allowance, a project’s cap, a customer’s resold spend.
- Use Rollup from Children for buckets that exist purely as organisational containers. A top-level bucket like Engineering can roll up the budgets of each team underneath it without needing its own explicit amount, and the effective budget adjusts automatically as children are added or modified.
Threshold alerts
Each cost bucket supports a list of budget thresholds – a percentage of the bucket’s effective budget paired with a severity (Critical, High, Medium, Low, or Info). When the bucket’s spend crosses a threshold, Troposphere generates a budget alert at the matching severity.
Thresholds already configured on a bucket are displayed on the bucket’s detail page alongside the current budget.
Coming Soon
The ability to add and edit thresholds from the console is in development. Until it ships, buckets created through the platform’s seeded defaults will display any pre-configured thresholds, and the alerting pipeline will fire against them on every sync. A future release will expose full threshold management directly on the bucket view.
Where budget alerts appear
Budget alerts are surfaced alongside every other alert type on the Alerts page, filtered by type (Budget) and severity. Each user can also opt in to email delivery for budget alerts from their personal Settings page – open the user menu in the top-right of the console and toggle Budget Alerts under Notification Preferences.
