Core Concepts

Troposphere provides a unified layer for managing infrastructure costs, compliance, and operational health across all connected cloud providers. Before diving into specific features, it helps to understand the core abstractions that the platform is built around.

Connections link your cloud provider accounts to Troposphere, enabling automatic discovery of resources and cost data. Resources represent the individual cloud assets discovered from those connections, organised into a searchable, tagged inventory. Cost Buckets let you group and allocate spend across teams, projects, or business units with configurable budgets and alerts.

On the governance side, Policies define compliance rules that are continuously evaluated against your resources, and Policy Packs bundle pre-built rules for well-known frameworks like CIS, HIPAA, PCI DSS, and SOC 2 so you can enforce them without authoring each rule yourself. Insights surface automated recommendations across security, cost, reliability, and best practice dimensions, while Alerts tie everything together by delivering notifications when budgets are exceeded, policies are violated, or insights require attention.

Finally, Organisations provide multi-tenancy, allowing you to manage users, roles, and access control across your entire cloud estate.

The pages in this section explain each of these concepts in detail.
